Los Angeles

PUBLIC SAFETY

$270 million is equivalent to each of the following:

· 50% of the entire Fire Department (Total Budget: $535 million)

· 56% of all firefighter salaries (Sworn Salaries including bonuses and overtime: $487.4 million)

· 40% of what the City spends on Police Patrol
(Patrol Budget: $633 million)

· The combined cost of providing:

    • Crime Investigation (LAPD: $98 million)
    • Traffic Control (LAPD: $63 million)
    • Emergency Ambulance Services
      (LAFD:  $83 million)
    • Public safety services at all City facilities
      (GSD: $23 million)

RECREATION, YOUTH & FAMILIES

$270 million is equivalent to the combined General Fund contribution to the budget of the following departments:

 Included in these budgets are:

  • 63 branch libraries
  • 9 regional libraries
  • 1 historic and renowned observatory
  • Half of the Zoo’s budget
  • Over 15,710 acres of park land
  • Over 400 parks
  • 380 children’s play areas
  • 183 recreation centers
  • 13 golf courses
  • 60 swimming pools
  • Primary advocates for the disabled and elderly communities
  • Construction of a new multi-purpose center in the Valley
  • Over 2,600 summer jobs for youth
  • Over 900 shelter beds
  • 900,000 congregate meals for seniors
  • 850,000 homebound meals
